Tsutsugamushi disease is a mite-born infectious disease caused by a microorganism, Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, characteristically with fever, headache, a raised (macular) rash, swollen glands (lymphadenopathy) and a dark crusted ulcer (called an eschar or tache noire) at the site of the chigger (mite larval) bite.

This disease mainly occurs in Asia (Korea, Japan, India, China and Australia). Special caution is required for the people who plan to go gather edible wild plants or to work in mountains and forests in the fall.
