FeaturesCod is the common name for nearly 60 species of the family Gadidae. Other common names include Alaska cod, Pacific cod, true cod, gray cod. Pacific cod live primarily along the sea bottoms and are found in cold or temperate northern seas at depths ranging from 600 to 1200 ft (15 to 550 m) and undertake long migrations up to 2,500 miles. The cod is distinguished by the presence of 3 dorsal and 2 anal fins, a long chin barbel, and a space between the second and third dorsal fins. Cod have a prominent arch under the 1st and 2nd dorsal fins, straight toward the tail, ending under the 3rd dorsal. Cod are predominately brown or gray becoming paler towards the belly with dark spots on the sides. The fins are dusky with white edges. The cod gather in large schools to spawn. In the eastern Bering Sea, spawning takes place during the winter months from January to April. Pacific cod do not feed during spawning.
