Dirt is the number one source of troubleshooting in optical networks today. Westover Scientific's patented CleanBlast™ Fiber end-face cleaning systems provide a fast, cost-effective solution for removing loose dirt and debris from connectors at every stage of life. When used prior to each mating, the cleaning effectiveness is nearly 100%. CleanBlast utilizes a highly filtered stream of pressurized gas in conjunction with a vacuum circuit to create a high flow rate jet across the surface of the fiber. Once established, 30 micro liters of cleaning solvent are injected into the flow. The solvent, along with the contamination removed from the end-face, are then removed through the retrieval circuit. The entire process takes about five seconds. A complete system requires a base unit and a cleaning tip suitable for the connector being cleaned. Cleaning tips are available for both male and female connectors. Portable systems have a built-in compressor and only require a source of power (100-250V, 50-60Hz). All systems include an input port for a probe microscope, as well as a video output that can be connected to an external monitor or to a mounted LCD. "Digital" cleaning machines feature an additional output to a USB port so the image can be brought to a PC for documentation or display. The system's solvent reservoir holds enough for approximately 8, 000 cleaning cycles. The refill process is simple and spill-resistant. A built-in safety prevents the handset from actuating the cleaning cycle unless it is depressed, protecting against accidental solvent discharge. The system monitors solvent levels and the safety switch, and provides a series of LED's on the front panel to indicate system status.
