The leaves are opposite, glossy dark green, 6-17 cm long and 3-8 cm broad. The flowers are similar to other privets, white or near white, borne in panicles, and fragrant. It is the largest species in the genus, growing as a tree up to 25 m tall. The plant is often used as an ornamental tree, sometimes as the variegated cultivar.
