The WaterBag offers a new solution using recyclable type bags filled with a polyacrylate polymer. Water can easily be found and used at the site. The WaterBags are constructed of strong, porous polypropylene plastic or burlap and, when filled, withstand the forces of floodwaters. A small amount of polymer is added to the bag. When the bag is filled with water, the polymer is activated into a heavy gel. This gel stabilizes the water inside the WaterBag and gives it strength to form a barrier as the bags are stacked at the dike site. When floodwaters recede, the gel is removed or the bags are dried out. This output can be dumped directly back into the river where it has no effect on aquatic life; or it can be disposed of at local landfills or agricultural fields.
